About Kellyn Brooks, LPC
Hello and welcome!I'm Kellyn.
(she/her/hers)I’m so excited to help you along your amazing journey. It’s so important to feel a connection to your therapist, especially if you’re new to therapy. I enjoy meeting and getting to know individuals for who they are, and providing support as they progress on their journey of personal growth.
Let me tell you a bit more about my background and my counseling approach.
Kellyn
Professional Background
In 2019, I earned a Master of Education degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Augusta University. At the beginning of my career, I had the opportunity to work both in the community mental health setting, and in private practice. I worked with folks desiring a safe space for expression, and a safe person to walk with them through the darkness. Many of these folks were LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent, grappling with generational trauma, people pleasers and chronic fixers. All of them were struggling to disentangle themselves from society’s expectations, or harmful stories about themselves, and needed a compassionate, brave space to do so.
I continued my work in the private practice and community health setting before opening my own private practice in early 2024.
My Counseling Philosophy
- Therapy is collaborative. It’s my job to sit in the passenger’s seat, and occasionally offer feedback, reflections, or suggestions. However, I will never try to drive the car for you. I make it a priority to frequently check in with you to see how therapy is going, and what we should do more and less of. Please feel free to keep it real with me.
- I’m an authentic therapist. This means I don’t control my facial expressions or body language to convey a “blank slate.” In our work, I always embrace showing the human experience. I put a high premium on full honesty with my clients.
- My work as a therapist is highly informed by my personal values. Therefore, I operate from an anti-oppressive, anti-capitalist perspective, due to the innumerable and well-documented negative impacts these entities cause for people like you and I.
- In working from a somatic, bottom-up approach, therapy with me is experiential. We will try different exercises and techniques together in session, so that you can use them on your own. I have witnessed that a HUGE part of the healing process comes in the experience of therapy itself: sitting with someone who cares, and having the experience of being seen and cared about.
- I work from an attachment-focused, trauma-informed perspective. Developing a healthy attachment to an attentive and informed therapist can help heal attachment wounds from early childhood. I also work to remain aware of how trauma histories can impact how you function today, and how we can accommodate your trauma healing at the right pace for you.
In other words…
I aim to establish a strong connection with you, build trust, foster a collaborative approach to helping you overcome obstacles, and work together towards achieving your goals.
The Therapy Nitty-Gritty
While my approach is always tailored to fit your individual needs, here’s some information on the formal therapeutic approaches I use in the therapy space.
Somatic therapy involves working with the body and senses to bring about healing from trauma, and other stressors. Learn more about somatic therapy here.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is a therapy modality useful for helping folks learn to cope effectively with day-to-day stresses, navigate relationships healthily, and how to ride the wave of panic and dysregulation. Here is a great resource to learn more.
Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is especially helpful for folks with anxiety and depression in learning to accept what we cannot change, and commit ourselves to changing what is within our power. Click here to learn more about ACT therapy.
Compassion-focused therapy can help you learn to value yourself and treat yourself with compassion, which is beneficial for one’s mental and physical health. You can learn more here.
