Frequently Asked Questions about Grief and Loss
During this difficult and confusing time, it’s important to have the right information about what’s to be expected. Check out the following FAQs to learn the facts about grief and loss.
Why do I feel so many different emotions at once?
Grief is nothing short of a rollercoaster of emotions. You are probably feeling sadness one minute, anger the next, guilt, and even relief. Even though your feelings may be rapidly changing, or seemingly making no sense, I promise that nothing you are feeling is abnormal! To help you unravel your different emotions, talk to a trusted loved one or a therapist, or spend time journaling.
How long will it take for me to feel better?
I wish I could tell you that there’s a linear process or a set timeline for grief. But the truth is, there isn’t. Everyone experiences it differently, on different timelines. It’s important to be patient with yourself and allow yourself to heal at your own pace. Grief and loss therapy in Georgia can help support you through this process.

But what is grief, if not love persevering?
Is it normal if I’m not following the “five stages of grief”?
The five stages of grief are so ingrained in our society’s understand of what it means to experience a loss. However, what if I told you that this model isn’t meant for grieving folks at all? That’s right! Elizabeth Kubler-Ross developed the five stages model to describe the emotional stages common for those with terminal illnesses facing death. So, you don’t necessarily need to expect yourself to follow these stages at all. All emotions (and I mean ALL) are normal and valid in the grieving experience.
How can I cope with grief in a healthy way?
There are a lot of helpful strategies when it comes to dealing with grief and loss. I suggest talking to a therapist, joining a support group, practicing supportive self-care activities, spending time in nature, and expressing your emotions through writing or art. If you have a religious/spiritual practice, you might also find some way to involve your loved one, such as a prayer or meditation practice, or a sacred physical marker of your loved one.
Is it normal to want to move on even though I love the person I am grieving?
Moving on from a loss doesn’t mean forgetting about the person or the significance of the loss. Instead, it means finding a way to integrate the loss into your life and create a new sense of normalcy. While it may seem impossible now, with time and support, you can find a way to move forward while still honoring the memory of your loved one.
